What Is GIFT Nifty Live?

GIFT Nifty Live is the real-time price of the Nifty 50 futures contract traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gujarat. It is the official successor to SGX Nifty, which migrated from Singapore to India in July 2023. GIFT Nifty trades round-the-clock across two sessions — 6:30 AM to 3:40 PM IST and 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST — capturing global market movements while Indian equity markets are closed.

For Indian retail and institutional traders, GIFT Nifty serves as the single most important pre-market indicator. In the 15-minute window before NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST, the gap between GIFT Nifty and the previous day's Nifty 50 closing price directly implies whether the market will open with a gap-up, flat, or gap-down.

Know in detail about What is Gift Nifty:

GIFT Nifty vs SGX Nifty: What Changed?

SGX Nifty was the Nifty 50 futures contract traded on Singapore Exchange (SGX). In July 2023, NSE successfully relocated this contract to NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, Ahmedabad — India's own International Financial Services Centre. The product was renamed GIFT Nifty. All open positions were migrated, contract specifications remained the same (lot size: 25 units, USD-denominated), and liquidity transferred smoothly. The key difference: GIFT Nifty brings price discovery back to Indian soil and under IFSCA/SEBI regulatory oversight.

  • Evening (7:00 PM – 10:00 PM IST): When the U.S. markets open, increasing volatility and trading opportunities.

How to Read GIFT Nifty as a Pre-Market Indicator

The GIFT Nifty premium or discount to the previous day's Nifty 50 closing price is the core signal. If GIFT Nifty is trading at 24,350 and Nifty 50 closed at 24,200, the implied gap-up is +150 points.

The formula: Implied Nifty Open = Previous Nifty Close ± GIFT Nifty Spread.

Historical accuracy of GIFT Nifty (and before it, SGX Nifty) as a directional predictor is approximately 75–85%. Major divergences occur around US Fed decisions, geopolitical events, or when global markets reverse sharply between 6:30 AM and 9:15 AM IST. Always cross-reference with Dow Jones Futures, Hang Seng, and Nikkei before the open for a complete picture.

Factors That Drive GIFT Nifty Levels

GIFT Nifty reflects a blend of global and domestic signals. US market performance (S&P 500, Dow Jones, Nasdaq) has the highest correlation with overnight GIFT Nifty movement. Asian markets (Nikkei 225, Hang Seng, KOSPI) influence early morning levels. USD/INR exchange rate movements affect the USD-denominated contract's implied INR value. FII positioning (trackable via NiftyTrader's FIIs and DIIs Activity page) reflects institutional directional bias. Crude oil price and global bond yields are secondary but significant drivers for Indian market sentiment.

Who Can Trade GIFT Nifty?

GIFT Nifty on NSE International Exchange is accessible to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) through IFSCA-licensed brokers. Indian residents are currently restricted from trading directly on NSE IX. This regulatory distinction is important: the page is a live data and analysis tool for Indian traders to read GIFT Nifty as a market signal — not a platform for placing GIFT Nifty trades.
